The year 2022 marked a dynamic beginning for PageSpeed.ONE. We offered more web speed optimization consulting services than ever before and developed our proprietary speed tester. We also expanded to a four-member team by adding Radek alongside Michal, Zuzka, and myself.

Most importantly, we significantly improved web speed for many clients. We also focused on the increasingly crucial topic of cultivating a culture of speed.

Selected Speed Optimizations

Sometimes progress is swift, sometimes it’s more of a marathon. But we know for sure that when a client prioritizes speed and communication flows smoothly, results inevitably follow. Here are three of the most intriguing cases.

Dr. Max: Optimizing CLS and LCP

Since 2021, we’ve been collaborating with Dr. Max Group to accelerate their pharmaceutical e-shops. We developed an audit for Peter Varga's team, which successfully improved the Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) metric:

We primarily focused on optimizing the display of personalized content managed by the Persoo component. The client then concentrated on backend improvements, specifically targeting the TTFB metric:

Real user measurements in SpeedCurve. We love seeing those downward steps!

Current Core Web Vitals metrics across all sites are looking splendid…

We’re not done with optimizations for Dr. Max yet. Next, we’ll analyze the impact of speed on conversions, strengthen the Performance Culture, and undertake further technical metric optimizations.

Sazka: Continuing a Four-Year Collaboration, Approaching a Happy Ending

Sazka is one of my longest-standing clients, with our collaboration starting in 2018 and continuing under the PageSpeed.ONE banner since last year.

In large companies, speed optimization is often about building a “Performance Culture.” Thanks to significant help from Martin Kocourek at Sazka and their developers, we made substantial progress with speed last year:

Metrics falling, make a wish.

We’re just a step away from our goal—“green Web Vitals” across the entire domain—despite attempts by various third-party component suppliers to derail our efforts last year. But that’s a story for another time.

Goldea: Optimizing CLS

Our client MIONET from Zlín operates a network of home textile e-shops under the Goldea brand. They approached us to optimize Core Web Vitals, particularly the Cumulative Layout Shift metric.

Mobile CLS optimization was straightforward—mostly minor HTML and CSS tweaks and fine-tuning ajax pagination, which can often be a speed bottleneck.

The desktop challenge was a bit more intense. Unwanted page jumping was particularly problematic during product list filtering:

Filtering in product lists here increases CLS.

… but we managed to conquer that too:

This collaboration taught us a lot about CLS metrics, their specifics, and also drawbacks. Expect a detailed case study from us soon.

Last year, we also made appearances at several conferences, including our presentation and discussion at WebExpo.

Performance Culture: Building a Culture of Speed in Organizations

A growing part of our work involves fostering what’s known as Performance Culture, where we assist clients with internal processes to continue improving speed even without our intensive involvement.

Here are three examples of this type of collaboration from last year:

  1. For HP Tronic, specifically Datart websites, we conducted a speed audit, trained non-technical staff, and used SpeedCurve RUM to find correlations between business and speed metrics. We now know which metrics to prioritize, making optimization prioritization easier.
  2. At Sazka, in addition to the usual optimizations mentioned earlier, we conducted developer workshops. The goal was to transfer as much of our technical knowledge as possible so they could solve issues independently. We also set further optimization goals during these workshops. They were highly successful, helping Sazka achieve its current web speed level.
  3. For Dr. Max Group, we prepared online developer training and spoke about speed at their successful internal conference:

Most of our clients work with us on a long-term basis through the SpeedCare oversight service. We regularly meet with the client-side team, educate them, actively monitor metrics, and propose simple technical optimizations.

We can help both small and large clients and find time for your project too. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

May you prosper in 2023, not just with web speed!
